Autorité de régulation des télécommunications (ART) published today the fifth edition of its quarterly survey of telecommunications operators. This Observatory presents the results of the first quarter 2001.
- The end client market
 
During the first quarter 2001, operators generated sales of €7.7 billion, representing 2.3% of France's GDP (compared with 2.1% the previous year). These figures are up 11.6% from the first quarter 2000 (27.8% in volume).
Mobile telephony—up by almost 4.7% from the previous quarter, and 25% over a year—now represents 30.6% of total sector sales, compared with 27.3% a year earlier.

- The interconnection market
 
For the first quarter 2001, the intermediate operator market, i.e. the interconnection market, showed sales of €1.637 billion compared with €1.323 billion at the first quarter 2000, for an increase of 23.7%. This market grew 32.3% in volume during the same period.
- The fixed telephony market
 
- Subscriptions and access fees represented €1.377 billion (+7.6% year on year), for one third of the fixed telephony market.
 - Sales for calls made from fixed lines (excluding access, subscription, cards and public telephones) represented €2.320 billion, for a 3.4% drop over one year.
 - The inventory of fixed lines was 34.015 million lines compared with 33.877 million at the 1st quarter 2000; 5.104 million of fixed telephone subscribers used call-by-call carrier selection, while 2.866 million chose pre-selection.
 - The Internet access market grew threefold, in volume, in one year.
 - The number of call minutes from fixed telephones (including Internet) grew from 36.882 billion at Q1 2000 to 47.568 billion at Q1 2001, for a 28.9% increase.
 
- The mobile telephony market
 
- Sales for mobile services continued to grow: +25% year on year, reaching €2.319 billion at Q1 2001.
 - The monthly bill for mobile subscribers was €25.40, down 10.6% over the previous year.
 - Average monthly traffic volumes represent 115.6 minutes, down 9.1% in one year.
